Timothy George, professor of Church History 1978-1988, is the founding dean of Beeson Divinity School at Samford University and has been at Beeson since its inception in 1988. At the school, he teaches church history, historical theology, and the theology of the Reformers. He currently serves as executive editor for Christianity Today and serves on the editorial advisory boards of the Harvard Theological Review, Christian History, and Books & Culture.

George came to Southern in 1978 as a rising academic star, freshly graduated from doctoral work at Harvard University. In his work at Southern, George sought to educate his students on the depth and reach of God’s church. Years after he concluded study with George, Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. recounted George’s opening statement for his church history class: “My task in this class is to convince you that there was someone between your grandmother and Jesus and that it matters.” (1)

Following his time at the seminary, George moved on to Beeson to lead the school in its infancy. Beyond his work at Beeson, George has also served on the Board of Directors of Lifeway Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. A respected author, he has written more than twenty books and regularly contributes to scholarly journals. His textbook, Theology of the Reformers, is the standard textbook in many schools and seminaries on reformation theology. An ordained minister, George has pastored churches in Tennessee, Alabama, and Massachusetts. He and his wife, Denise, have two children, Christian and Alyce.
