Boyce’s Teaching Method

Seminary Founder James P. Boyce practiced a teaching method that elicited later comment from former student W.O. Carver:

“After this students memorized, literally, the four or five pages of the book assigned for each class meeting and reproduced it as they were called on. The recitation was sometimes by writing out the outline on the blackboard, sometimes by standing in one’s place and reciting the text until stopped by the professor, when another student would ask to “Take it up at that point.” If by inattention or any other cause he could not “take it up” so much the worse for him. Down went a zero in the record book!”
