Luther Rice (1783-1836) was the father of American Baptist foreign missions. A former Congregationalist minister, he and Adoniram Judson sailed to India and Burma respectively; however, by the time they arrived on the mission field, both had adopted the Baptist position on baptism. Rice was instrumental in opening Columbian College in Washington, D. C. (which became George Washington University), and started the publication of the Columbian Star, the first weekly family newspaper published by Baptists.
